'Raritan' is is a new EFB resistant hazelnut release from Rutgers. It is a high yielding tree that produces medium size, round kernels that blanch well, making it suitable for a variety of confectionary and baked good applications as well as for direct eating especially when roasted (Fig 1a and 1b). Most kernels are 12–14 mm in diameter with an average weight of 1.14 grams and a kernel percentage of 48%

'Raritan' is a vigorous tree with an upright, somewhat narrow growth habit (Fig 2a and 2b). Trees at 15 years can reach over 20 feet tall. 'Raritan' has a very high level of tolerance to EFB (high quantitative resistance). No fungicide sprays are expected to be needed for production although regular scouting for cankers and removal of infected branches, if ever present, are recommended.

'Raritan' nuts have an attractive dark brown shell (Fig 3) and a majority (>85%) drop free from the husk and fall cleanly at maturity (Fig 4a and 4b). Nuts typically fall in the second half of September.

'Beast' and 'Grand Traverse' are recommended pollinizers. These Rutgers hazelnuts alone will not pollinize themselves.

These plants are 4"-6" tall and have been potted and hardened off for fall planting. They will ship November 7th. Buyer assumes shipping risk given time of year.
