Stubbs Everbearing Mulberry Tree
Last year I declared to friends and to the universe that the Stubbs Everbearing Mulberry was my holy grail tree. As in, it was going to be the one tree I would spend the rest of my life tracking down. In February of this year, I received a message from my good friend and fruit exploring twin Taylor Malone telling me that he had run across a document from John Hershey with the planting locations of Stubbs (along with Hicks, which I already had). Taylor inquired with some of these places and lo and behold, some of the mulberry trees were still there. We are fairly confident based on old correspondence and groundskeeper irritation that this is either Stubbs or Hicks. I can tell you right now that I don't think it's Hicks due to the willingness of this specimen to want to root. We wait with baited breath until the tree fruits in May to see if it really is Stubbs. In the meantime, I've grafted several hundred of these in anticipation of a positive ID. If this is Stubbs, it will be for sale in the Fall and I will start taking pre-orders this summer. Cross your fingers, everyone!
